What Is Air Duct Cleaning and Why Do I Need It?

Over time, your HVAC system’s air ducts, registers, grilles, and diffusers can become clogged with dirt, dust, pollen, and other debris. Combine this with moisture present from say, your air conditioner’s condensation, and now you’ve got the perfect breeding ground for mold.

When your HVAC system cycles on, this mold, dust, and other debris is released into your home and contaminates your air supply—drastically reducing your indoor air quality. The goal of air duct cleaning is, therefore, to remove this duct contamination and improve your indoor air quality. Duct cleaning is essential if anyone in your household suffers from asthma or allergies.

Our Duct Cleaning Process

If you decide to have your heating and cooling system cleaned, our team of certified HVAC technicians will clean all components of the air duct system to ensure it is thoroughly cleaned. Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination of the entire system.

We will use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, and remove contaminants with a high-powered vacuum cleaner. If necessary and applicable, we may use chemical biocides that kill germs and microbiological contaminants. This is usually applied to the inside of the heating and cooling duct work and to other system components.

Other air duct cleaning methods may include applying chemical treatments to cover the inside surfaces of the air ducts and equipment units in order to help control mold growth and prevent the release of dirt particles from ducts. These chemical treatments on heating and cooling ductwork are applied after the air duct system has been properly cleaned of all visible dust or debris.

Signs You Need Air Duct Cleaning

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends having your duct systems cleaned any time there is an excess of dust, debris, or any other particles that may be released when your system is in use. Duct cleaning is an important service to ensure that you are breathing clean air: free of dust mites, pet dander, dirt, and other contaminants. If these contaminants and allergens are not regularly cleaned, they are re-circulated when your HVAC system is in use.

You should consider having your heating and cooling air duct system cleaned especially in the following instances:

  • Ducts are clogged with excessive dust and debris, or dirt particles are released into the home
  • Ducts are infested with rodents or insects
  • Air ducts or other heating and cooling system components have substantial visible mold growth

It is also important to understand other aspects of mold detection in heating and cooling systems:

  • If the conditions causing the mold growth in the first place are not resolved, mold growth will recur.
  • Many sections of your heating and cooling system may not be accessible for a visible inspection, so be sure to consult an HVAC professional who can check for and show you any mold.
  • Although a substance may look like mold, it is best to have an HVAC expert inspect and diagnose the ductwork area of concern for final confirmation. If the insulation in your air ducts gets wet or moldy, it cannot be effectively cleaned and should be immediately removed and replaced.

For extreme conditions, it is essential to fix the origin of the problem in order to ensure the same issue does not recur. In such cases, cleaning, retrofitting, or replacing your ducts is a temporary solution. Our heating and cooling experts are qualified to identify and rectify the underlying cause or causes, which will save you time, money, and frustration in the long run.

Preventing Air Duct Contamination

Whether or not you decide to have the air ducts in your home cleaned, preventing water and dirt from entering your HVAC system is the most effective way to prevent contamination. If you have a fuel burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, we encourage you to have it inspected for proper ductwork and operation, and serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

If your heating and cooling system’s air ducts have not been inspected or cleaned in the past 12 to 18 months, take advantage of your local HVAC experts at American Mechanical. We are here to answer your questions and provide thorough inspection and professional air duct cleaning services, which can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system and even extend operating life.

Rave Reviews From Happy Customers

  • “Jon S. came out this evening with a sewer backup. He was very thorough trying to find out why it had occurred in order to hopefully prevent it from happening again. We purchased the house a few weeks ago. He found a 2nd sewer cleanout under our front schrubs other than the one in the back yard. This helped to alleviate our concern that the backup could be from underneath our home. He spent extra time with me this evening to go over common causes of sewer backups. He was very kind and courteous and professional.” - Kevin S.
  • “OTHERS LEFT SCRATCHING THEIR HEADS? I could not be more pleased with my recent service from Eric V. with American Mechanical. Eric responded to a service request for a strange high pitched squeal we've been hearing from our toilet. We had already been through two other companies in the area, both whom left scratching their heads with no answers. Eric was like a bloodhound on the trail. He explored a few possibilities, identified the possible issue, then tracked it every step of the way. We are currently in a rental, so our knowledge of past issues at this residence is limited. He was able to not only pinpoint the issue but also other factors throughout the house at different valves that were contributing to the noise. Eric is without a doubt the most thorough, persistent and invested plumber I have ever seen. I would highly recommend American Mechanical to anyone in the area, and would insist on Eric V. for a plumbing call. From their scheduling call to their service specialists, American Mechanical delivers top notch customer service all around.” - Amanda R.
  • “I recently had a service visit from the electricians Steve B. and John G. to complete electrical repairs on my home. They were competent, nice guys who did a fabulous job for me! I am very pleased with the outcome of their efforts. I also had a service visit from one of American Mechanical's plumbing technicians Robin W. and he equally did a fantastic job in fixing my commode which needed new tank bolts (which were no longer available) for my American Standard toilet. The technician was patient and was able to find compatible tank bolts to make the needed repair. All of these technicians were terrific and did a "beautiful" job for me. These are fine representatives of American Mechanical and I would highly recommend their services if you ever need an electrician or plumbing repair.” - Ed W.
  • “Eric V is a very honest hard working young man who knows what "customer service" really means. I really appreciated his honesty and his desire to do the job right. After the initial pressure washing of the sewer lines on 8/10/15, I was told by another technician (not Eric) that we would be fine after $495.00 charge. On 9/22/15 the other technician had to come back and pressure wash the pipes again because we were backing up again for another $495.00. So, now I was angry because we had only gone past the 30 day warranty by 12 days and we had to pay another $495.00. We also had to pay for a video scoping of the line and we were given a discount for that procedure (that cost $250.00) which I was told was a discounted rate from $325.00. Eric was the technician who came to do the video. He said the pipes were cast iron and looked to be in good shape and the last five feet before the city line had some roots in it that should be removed. That would require installing a two way clean-out for $450.00 and running a big snake to cut the roots. Eric did this job after much work at trying to remove a bush that was sitting over the pipe and discovering the water line ran directly above the sewer pipe. He was honest and hard working as I stated earlier. So, this job cost a total of $1,690.00 and probably would not have cost that much if Eric had been the first technician we saw. Eric did only what needed to be done and didn't try to "sell" a bigger job. I would call American Mechanical again as long as Eric was my technician. That is my honest review.” - Scott C.
  • “Joe went out of his way to come to my home on Christmas Eve. Par for the course for American Mechanical. He was prompt, professional and a pleasure to deal with. I will never use any other company! I love this company! Every interaction I have had with them has been nothing short of amazing. The staff…from owner to receptionist…has always been kind and courteous. I will never go elsewhere!” - Melanie G. Virginia Beach
  • “Joel was on time, courteous, and listened to what I had to say prior to offering solutions. Had to leave my job to complete another but said he would return. He really did and in a timely fashion. This is my third service with American Mechanical, they are my plumbers for life. Thank you for doing an excellent job at a very reasonable rate.” - Thomas
  • “Rich P. is a life saver! My upstairs bathroom sprung a leak and flooded the floor. My home warranty service couldn't get anyone out for 24 hours. We called American Mechanical and Rich P. was knocking on the door in roughly 30 minutes! Rich took one look and knew exactly what the issue was. Not only did he fix the problem, he also took extra time talking to a representative with the warranty company to help ensure I'm reimbursed. He did it all with a smile! He was very personable and professional. He really was the rainbow at the end of the storm. His calm demeanor, small talk and positive attitude really helped me let go of the stress and put a smile on my face. I can't say thank enough for his help. I'm definitely storing his business card in a safe spot...just in case!!!"” - Sherelle O.
  • “American Mechanical, Incorporated plumbing technician Jon S. just left after spending 3 hours to resolve my non-functioning DELTA kitchen faucet issue. He thoroughly trouble-shot the problem, cleaned assumed culprit and even got on the phone with the DELTA representative to follow up on my communications earlier with them. With DELTA’s help, Jon bypassed the bad switch and got running water to my faucet! Joy! Joy! Thankfully, Jon did not give up and was able to resolve my problem just in time for a party that we are hosting tomorrow!” - Sondra Mulkey
  • “Chuck was great with knowing exactly what was wrong and was a straight shooter in sharing information of what costs would be should we tackle another huge project. We’ve had other plumbers out before working on the same issue and Chuck was the only one who actually FIXED the problem.” - Gustavo O.
