HVAC Winterization Tips

Here are a few tips to maximize your energy efficiency this winter:

1. Protect against heat loss During the winter months, warm air is more likely to escape from your household through the cracks of window frames, door frames, and other similar places. To prevent unwanted air drafts, caulk, patch, or weather strip around windows and doors.
2. Clean and/or replace air filters – When your air filter is dirty or clogged your HVAC system works less efficiently to heat your home. It is recommended you replace your air filters every 90 days or so. If your house contains pets or young children, consider cleaning/replacing more frequently. Similarly, contact your local HVAC contractor to schedule air filter replacement.
3. Schedule semi-annual HVAC maintenance – When you live in Virginia Beach (or anywhere else for that matter), it is critical to schedule semi-annual HVAC maintenance once in the spring and once in the fall. Scheduling maintenance before the winter months ensures your furnace, heat pump, air ducts, and other heating and cooling equipment are operating properly and as efficiently as possible.
4. Don’t touch your thermostat! Unless weather conditions are extremely cold, try to keep your thermostat set to the same temperature. This helps prevent your heating and cooling system from continuous use and conserves energy. If you are traveling away from your home, consider setting your thermostat slightly lower (no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit) than usual to cut energy costs while your house remains unoccupied.

Inconsistent temperatures in your home, a heating system that is constantly running or turning on and off, or higher-than-usual utility bills are all signs that your HVAC system may not be working properly. When this occurs, contact your local HVAC contractor to schedule a heating checkup or maintenance.
