What Do Evaporator Coils Do?

What Do Evaporator Coils Do?

Just like that carbon monoxide detector in your home, evaporator coils are an “out of sight, out of mind” type of ordeal. It’s definitely not the most glamorous component of a heating and cooling system, but trust us when we tell you it sure is important. In fact, without an evaporator coil, your hvac system wouldn’t be able to function and you’d be left quite uncomfortable in your own house. So, what is an evaporator coil and why is it so important? Find out below!

What is an Evaporator Coil?

An evaporator coil is a main component of a heating and cooling system, even though most homeowners don’t pay it much attention. It works in tandem with a whole-house air conditioning unit or a heat pump by drawing cool air out of a house in order to warm it up during the colder months of the year and vice versa in the summer.

In addition to transferring heat, evaporator coils also help remove excess moisture from the air (similar to a dehumidifier) to keep your home within an acceptable humidity range all year long.

Without evaporator coils, your home simply would not be as comfortable as you’d like it to be.

Common Evaporator Coil Problems

Just like lots of other mechanical components in your home, evaporator coils can and do develop issues. Drastic changes in temperature, from freezing cold to scorching hot, adds stress to the parts and they’re also prone to rusting and occasional leaks.

In order to avoid some of the common problems, including dripping water, frozen parts, or vents blowing air that’s hot or cold when it should be the other, most manufacturers require regular maintenance.

Choosing to avoid or ignore regular maintenance check-ups can result in damaged parts or worse, complete system failure.

With that said, our technicians are able to access the coil, clean the trays and the coil unit itself, and test for leaks or other signs of failure. We provide you with the maintenance and cleaning needed to keep your overall HVAC system healthy and efficient. Give American Mechanical a call today at (757) 899-1554 .
