AC Repair or AC Replacement?

If your air conditioner breaks down, you’ll have an important question to answer: should you repair the system or replace it completely? This isn’t always an easy question to answer, and everyone’s situation is unique. Obviously if your system is still under warranty, you should have it repaired as it more than likely won’t cost you anything out of pocket. But if not, you’ll need to keep a few extra things in mind.

Here are a few different factors that could influence whether you should repair or replace:

  • Repair cost: How much will repairing the problem cost? If a repair is a significant expense, you may be better off simply replacing your system.
  • System age: How old is your air conditioner? The older it gets, the more likely it is that you should simply replace it. The average air conditioner lasts up to around 12 years on average, and 15 years if you maintain it regularly.
  • System features: Does your system have energy monitoring, smart home connectivity, zoning, or variable fan speeds? Modern units do, and you can enjoy them too by replacing!
  • Energy usage: Do you dread your energy bills over the summer months? Older systems consume far more energy. If your system is one of them, you may want to simply replace it and save.
  • Operating components: Does your system run on outdated technology, such as R-22 Freon? Older parts may no longer be manufactured, which means you may have to update to get your system working again!

Chesapeake AC Maintenance

Fewer than half of Chesapeake homeowners who own AC systems get them serviced regularly. Regular AC maintenance is as important as regular maintenance on your vehicle and should not be skipped.

Benefits of regular air conditioner maintenance:

  • Better Performance - The longer your AC system goes without service, the dirtier and more run down it gets. A regular inspection and cleaning will make your air conditioner last longer and cool your home more quickly.
  • Increased Efficiency - Changing some of the machine’s parts can make it more energy efficient. A grille change, for example, can be done properly by a professional and have the desired effects. Regularly maintained appliances also have higher energy efficiency ratings, saving you money on utilities.
  • Compliance - Leaks develop in the system can be hard to detect without professional knowledge. When a professional HVAC company performs an AC maintenance service, they can detect and fix any leaks, as well as repair it using and deposing of refrigerants as required by law.

If you need a simple air conditioner repair or complete overhaul and replacement, American Mechanical, Inc. is here to help. Rave Reviews From Happy Customers

  • “We just had American Mechanical out to re-pipe our house, replacing Quest piping with PEX. Sean Mayo did the estimate. This is the reason why we selected American Mechanical. Sean’s estimate was detailed and concise. It broke down exactly what American Mechanical was going to do. It was far superior to other estimate descriptions I got. Everyone I spoke with at American Mechanical was very courteous and professional. Shawn Pattee did the re-pipe with his team. Shawn was a pleasure to work with. He communicated with us every step of the way. He listened to our questions and made suggestions that were very helpful. I am highly impressed with his courtesy, professionalism and customer service. I give him a “Five Star” rating. The drywall person has yet to come out to replace the drywall, but I am very impressed with the American Mechanical team. I feel confident that I can highly recommend them to anyone who needs plumbing support.” - Russell G.
  • “When my husband and I made the decision to replace one of our compressors and gas furnace, I did some research and it was apparent instantly that not one other company was even remotely comparable to American Mechanical, Incorporated. Thousands of five star reviews, as well as an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau made our decision blatantly apparent and simple! They install Trane compressors and Trane gas furnaces, which are top of the line in every domain as documented in every article I researched. We made the decision on Friday, and the installation was scheduled for the following Wednesday. Their communication via text and e-mail, as well as telephone calls is beyond remarkable. From the second I called the company and spoke with Jennifer who was so very friendly, kind, and caring, my first impression couldn’t have been any better, Before anyone arrives at your home, you will receive EVERY TIME via text, a photo of the person arriving, their complete name and the time they will be arriving, as well as their position with American Mechanical. When our installation team Dillon and Mason arrived five minutes earlier than scheduled they explained, in detail a description of exactly what they were installing and how they were going to complete everything. Dillon and Mason are professionally trained Trane Installation Specialists. We saw firsthand their wealth of technical knowledge and the highest level of attention to detail in every step of the installation process. When everything was installed, they ran a test to ensure everything was running perfectly. Dillon and Mason were so meticulous that when they left, our yard and garage were even neater than when they arrived! Their thorough meticulousness, technical and professional skills are incomparable!” - Dr. and Mrs. Miller
  • “Jason G. is hands down the most professional and pleasant assessor I’ve worked with since owning our home and working with a dozen contractors. He literally knew something about everything (pets, HVAC/electrical, cooking, military, etc.). This made me very comfortable to work with him…it wasn’t a “get in and get out” experience. I’m super excited to work with American Mechanical and Jason. He didn’t try to “up sell” me things that weren’t important to my needs (at the time a generator). That’s uncommon and very much appreciated. I’m going to come back for HVAC work once my generator and electrical work are done. Thanks Jason!” - Shannon H.
  • “Hello American Mechanical! I wanted to send a review directly to your company about the technician that just came to my home to fix my generator that has been neglected for a few years. The technician’s name is Avi and this young man is exceptional! I don’t think I have ever had anyone come to my home from a company to service or fix anything and be as courteous, friendly or be as concerned about my happiness with the results of his visit. He was also very proud of the company that he is working for and representing. Now that in itself is very unusual! In my experience technicians usually have something bad to say about their company in one way or another. But not Avi. I don’t normally write reviews. But in this case, I was so delighted with this gentleman and in turn delighted with this company. How refreshing to enjoy a service call! American Mechanical you must be doing something right to have employees like this. I Hope you have more just like him. This man deserves a raise, I don’t care how much he is making now. I will be calling American Mechanical for all of the mechanical needs at my home. I certainly hope all of your technicians are just like Avi!” - Mr. and Mrs. Bongiovi
  • “I won the contest for having the oldest working heating system in Hampton Roads! American Mechanical, Incorporated paid $9,000.00 towards a new gas boiler. The sales representative came out to go over the boiler replacement with me and other available options. Seeing that my 103 year old house also has window air conditioning units, we decided to shut the old boiler down and install Trane/Mitsubishi mini-split heating and cooling system which costs more but will save us $$$ on heating and air conditioning bills. So, this past week two mechanics Bobby and Ryan who got tasked with the installation, showed up every morning at the crack of dawn and got the mission accomplished. Four days of kind of decent but chilly days! Dedicated guys, who worked pretty much until dark. The system works great! The cosmetics to the exterior of the house are perfect for what they had to deal with. Pride and professionalism definitely shows! Big thanks goes out! Well done!” - Donald H.
  • “Jennifer B. (Customer Service at American Mechanical) is an excellent service representative. She is extremely knowledgeable. On my second or third call concerning my problem Jennifer answered the telephone. I explained my situation and she took charge and solved everything within two days. I now have all the information my lawyer needs for closing. She is a pleasure to talk to and deserves a raise. Thanks again Jennifer!” - Judy S.
  • “Bobby and Darren called me 20 minutes prior to my scheduled appointment to notify me of their impending arrival. After I gave them the gate code to our community, they arrived right on schedule at my door. Both slid on blue booties upon entering my unit, went over the scope of work they would be performing and gave me an estimated completion time. Both jumped right on the job; one working on removing the old air handling unit and the other removing the condenser. Needless to say, they completed all the work to my satisfaction and prior to the estimated time. Both thanked me for my purchase, thanks to Mike Hayes, and left me with a nice cool house! Great work guys all around! What a sincere, effortless pleasure to deal with a professional company!” - Jeff H.
  • “Dennis arrived on time and performed a comprehensive inspection and report on my heating system. He answered all of my questions and provided excellent recommendations on maintenance. My experience with Dennis, as well as with all other technicians and support staff, has been outstanding because each member of the team is experienced, knowledgeable, professional and customer oriented. I strongly recommend American Mechanical for quality HVAC service at a competitive price.” - Marty B.
  • “In a late day emergency plumbing situation, Ed came out and did a top-notch job, going above and beyond. Even when it looked like he might not be able to fix the water leak in my condo, after the property manager informed him that the only water cut off was for the whole complex, there were none for the individual units. Ed took it upon himself to search around the crawl space under the building until he located the individual cut offs he knew there had to be. He was not only courteous, and professional, but was genuinely sympathetic to my plight and did everything he could to remedy the situation. I would gladly have him come out again for any future plumbing needs.” - Alan M.
