What Is Air Duct Cleaning and Why Do I Need It?

Over time, your HVAC system’s air ducts, registers, grilles, and diffusers can become clogged with dirt, dust, pollen, and other debris. Combine this with moisture present from say, your air conditioner’s condensation, and now you’ve got the perfect breeding ground for mold.

When your HVAC system cycles on, this mold, dust, and other debris is released into your home and contaminates your air supply—drastically reducing your indoor air quality. The goal of air duct cleaning is, therefore, to remove this duct contamination and improve your indoor air quality. Duct cleaning is essential if anyone in your household suffers from asthma or allergies.

Our Duct Cleaning Process

If you decide to have your heating and cooling system cleaned, our team of certified HVAC technicians will clean all components of the air duct system to ensure it is thoroughly cleaned. Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination of the entire system.

We will use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, and remove contaminants with a high-powered vacuum cleaner. If necessary and applicable, we may use chemical biocides that kill germs and microbiological contaminants. This is usually applied to the inside of the heating and cooling duct work and to other system components.

Other air duct cleaning methods may include applying chemical treatments to cover the inside surfaces of the air ducts and equipment units in order to help control mold growth and prevent the release of dirt particles from ducts. These chemical treatments on heating and cooling ductwork are applied after the air duct system has been properly cleaned of all visible dust or debris.

Signs You Need Air Duct Cleaning

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends having your duct systems cleaned any time there is an excess of dust, debris, or any other particles that may be released when your system is in use. Duct cleaning is an important service to ensure that you are breathing clean air: free of dust mites, pet dander, dirt, and other contaminants. If these contaminants and allergens are not regularly cleaned, they are re-circulated when your HVAC system is in use.

You should consider having your heating and cooling air duct system cleaned especially in the following instances:

  • Ducts are clogged with excessive dust and debris, or dirt particles are released into the home
  • Ducts are infested with rodents or insects
  • Air ducts or other heating and cooling system components have substantial visible mold growth

It is also important to understand other aspects of mold detection in heating and cooling systems:

  • If the conditions causing the mold growth in the first place are not resolved, mold growth will recur.
  • Many sections of your heating and cooling system may not be accessible for a visible inspection, so be sure to consult an HVAC professional who can check for and show you any mold.
  • Although a substance may look like mold, it is best to have an HVAC expert inspect and diagnose the ductwork area of concern for final confirmation. If the insulation in your air ducts gets wet or moldy, it cannot be effectively cleaned and should be immediately removed and replaced.

For extreme conditions, it is essential to fix the origin of the problem in order to ensure the same issue does not recur. In such cases, cleaning, retrofitting, or replacing your ducts is a temporary solution. Our heating and cooling experts are qualified to identify and rectify the underlying cause or causes, which will save you time, money, and frustration in the long run.

Preventing Air Duct Contamination

Whether or not you decide to have the air ducts in your home cleaned, preventing water and dirt from entering your HVAC system is the most effective way to prevent contamination. If you have a fuel burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, we encourage you to have it inspected for proper ductwork and operation, and serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

If your heating and cooling system’s air ducts have not been inspected or cleaned in the past 12 to 18 months, take advantage of your local HVAC experts at American Mechanical. We are here to answer your questions and provide thorough inspection and professional air duct cleaning services, which can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system and even extend operating life.

Rave Reviews From Happy Customers

  • “I contacted American Mechanical upon returning home after a year overseas and found my plumbing (among other things) to be in complete disarray. It was not an emergency but definitely a quality of life issue and they made me their first available appointment and worked within my schedule. Sean was my specialist and he assessed and fixed everything in less than a few hours. He was also extremely helpful in providing me with more information regarding the other problems going on in my home (HVAC/Electrical). I am looking forward to my next consult with American Mechanical to address these as well! In my experience it’s been hard to find honest and selfless companies who aren’t out to rip you off or take advantage of the homeowners ignorance with maintenance problems – and that is the complete opposite of what I experienced with this company. So thank you for allowing me to take a bath finally and making my transition back home less stressful.” - Anonymous
  • “Rich and Dylan did an amazing job with our plumbing issue. Professional, spot on technicians. These two gentlemen had our yard dug up, old sewage system out, new system in place with two new clean outs, sealed, tested and covered back up amazingly fast. Not only did they fix our major problems, Rich gave us some sound advice, fixed out outside faucet, and was the most professional plumber I have ever met. We couldn’t have asked for a better duo and if we ever run into a plumbing issue again American Mechanical will be the first people I call requesting Rich and Dylan for our work. Thanks again for everything and continue the great work.” - Mike P.
  • “Yesterday four gas leaks were discovered on the line to the generator. It was installed by your firm several years ago. The response by you and by Virginia Natural Gas was just fabulous! I must compliment you on your employee Chris C.. He arrived about 20 minutes after our call. He explained the situation to us in a way that two old ladies could understand, repaired the pipes and made sure we understood the situation. We were more than pleased with him and feel he should be commended. Thank you for your prompt service!!” - Carol Lee F.
  • “From job scoping to planning to installation to final testing for a new heat pump installation as part of an older home renovation without a system, the job was truly pleasing. The initial planning (Mike H.) clearly identified needs, options, and costs of a top-value unit. The installation by Tony J. and Taylor started as planned, went much quicker than expected, and caused minimal intrusion and interference for the occupants. In particular, Tony’s professional knowledge, communication skills, and truly caring attitude through numerous emergency challenges made the customer confident in the right company choice. During start-up and final testing Manny not only worked the system to peak operational performance but also intelligently answered numerous customer questions. The price was reasonable for a top-rated product suitable to the job and a truly professional team effort.” - George T.
  • “This letter of recommendation is in regards to Jason Gay of American Mechanical and the outstanding work that he did in our home on Tuesday, October 30, 2018. We appreciated that Jason gave us advance notice for his timely arrival. Throughout his time here, he was friendly and courteous, working tirelessly in a tiny bathroom. In tackling the installation of the ceiling fan, he needed to cut out a portion of the ceiling to make room for a larger size fan than what was there previously. This meant that he was dealing with very old, loose, and extremely messy insulation and plenty of dust (plus the fact that he was allergic to our cats). Yet Jason never wavered or complained, but worked steadily and efficiently in getting the job done. After installing the fan, he proceeded to replace a 40 year old light fixture with a new one. Then he put in a new GFCI outlet and replaced some switches. We were very impressed with his work and he did an exceptional job. One more reason that we were very pleased, Jason left the bathroom meticulously clean. That was a pleasant surprise and very much appreciated. In every way, Jason did remarkable work for us. We could not have been happier with his service and we would highly recommend him to others.” - Mr. & Mrs. Jennings
  • “Very timely and professional. I couldn’t be more pleased. American Mechanical and its employees give you the impression that there is still somebody left in this United States who appreciates the value of good work and quality customer service. Very refreshing to deal with a company like that.” - P. M. Bruening Jr.
  • “They are the best team ever. They care about everything. They make sure it is done right and call you to let you know that they are coming. I could not say enough about this team and their company. They are awesome and they are there when you need them no matter.” - K. Handy
  • “On August 22, 2018 , after notifying Dominion Energy that I again had a Quest water pipe break, I contacted American Mechanical office seeking scheduled repair service from a company I definitely trust in terms of quality workmanship and actual caring about its customers. I was out of town to attend a granddaughter’s wedding when the leak was discovered, but did arrange for the water to be turned off, and an appointment for August 24 to meet with one of your skilled plumbers. A repair appointment was arranged for the upcoming Monday and two diligent, determined Company employees arrived to tackle what turned out to be a treacherous task (Dylan and Kelvin I believe…it has been awhile and the reason this letter is in such arears has to do with two unexpected family deaths that occurred during this time frame). The task was quite a challenge and a host of other employees turned out to assist…it was almost virtual brotherhood! Joel (I believe) headed up the job and was a fine leader! Honestly, I have yet to see such perseverance in August’s boiling temperatures! As I expected, the job was efficiently and expeditiously completed. And needless to say, I remain a loyal, satisfied customer. Mr. Cornett, I could go on and on…well, you know I can, you’ve read my letters before. But I do have to say thank you again (I wish I knew everyone’s name) to you and your amazing crew at American Mechanical.” - Carolyn
  • “Kevin and Dennis are expert HVAC mechanics and did an outstanding job installing new duct work and an HVAC unit. My wife and I were impressed by their neatness and cleanliness, you would be hard pressed to find a scrap or speck of trash after they left. They were far superior in workmanship and communications over our old company. We are glad that we made the switch to a very professional and skilled company. You will be lucky if you choose this company and have Kevin and Dennis available to do your work.” - John F.
