What Is Air Duct Cleaning and Why Do I Need It?

Over time, your HVAC system’s air ducts, registers, grilles, and diffusers can become clogged with dirt, dust, pollen, and other debris. Combine this with moisture present from say, your air conditioner’s condensation, and now you’ve got the perfect breeding ground for mold.

When your HVAC system cycles on, this mold, dust, and other debris is released into your home and contaminates your air supply—drastically reducing your indoor air quality. The goal of air duct cleaning is, therefore, to remove this duct contamination and improve your indoor air quality. Duct cleaning is essential if anyone in your household suffers from asthma or allergies.

Our Duct Cleaning Process

If you decide to have your heating and cooling system cleaned, our team of certified HVAC technicians will clean all components of the air duct system to ensure it is thoroughly cleaned. Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination of the entire system.

We will use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, and remove contaminants with a high-powered vacuum cleaner. If necessary and applicable, we may use chemical biocides that kill germs and microbiological contaminants. This is usually applied to the inside of the heating and cooling duct work and to other system components.

Other air duct cleaning methods may include applying chemical treatments to cover the inside surfaces of the air ducts and equipment units in order to help control mold growth and prevent the release of dirt particles from ducts. These chemical treatments on heating and cooling ductwork are applied after the air duct system has been properly cleaned of all visible dust or debris.

Signs You Need Air Duct Cleaning

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends having your duct systems cleaned any time there is an excess of dust, debris, or any other particles that may be released when your system is in use. Duct cleaning is an important service to ensure that you are breathing clean air: free of dust mites, pet dander, dirt, and other contaminants. If these contaminants and allergens are not regularly cleaned, they are re-circulated when your HVAC system is in use.

You should consider having your heating and cooling air duct system cleaned especially in the following instances:

  • Ducts are clogged with excessive dust and debris, or dirt particles are released into the home
  • Ducts are infested with rodents or insects
  • Air ducts or other heating and cooling system components have substantial visible mold growth

It is also important to understand other aspects of mold detection in heating and cooling systems:

  • If the conditions causing the mold growth in the first place are not resolved, mold growth will recur.
  • Many sections of your heating and cooling system may not be accessible for a visible inspection, so be sure to consult an HVAC professional who can check for and show you any mold.
  • Although a substance may look like mold, it is best to have an HVAC expert inspect and diagnose the ductwork area of concern for final confirmation. If the insulation in your air ducts gets wet or moldy, it cannot be effectively cleaned and should be immediately removed and replaced.

For extreme conditions, it is essential to fix the origin of the problem in order to ensure the same issue does not recur. In such cases, cleaning, retrofitting, or replacing your ducts is a temporary solution. Our heating and cooling experts are qualified to identify and rectify the underlying cause or causes, which will save you time, money, and frustration in the long run.

Preventing Air Duct Contamination

Whether or not you decide to have the air ducts in your home cleaned, preventing water and dirt from entering your HVAC system is the most effective way to prevent contamination. If you have a fuel burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, we encourage you to have it inspected for proper ductwork and operation, and serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

If your heating and cooling system’s air ducts have not been inspected or cleaned in the past 12 to 18 months, take advantage of your local HVAC experts at American Mechanical. We are here to answer your questions and provide thorough inspection and professional air duct cleaning services, which can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system and even extend operating life.

Rave Reviews From Happy Customers

  • “I don’t normally write reviews, but I have to say, Phil from American Mechanical is a true professional and an incredibly knowledgeable individual. I had called American Mechanical after a failed attempt by my Home Warranty company to correct a sewage drainage/back up issue. I was pretty upset at this point especially with the service I had just received from another company. The woman I spoke with on the phone was friendly, patient and helpful! We had just moved into this house and sewage is definitely not what you want to deal with right from the start. The home warranty company sent someone out who said I had a collapsed line and that there was nothing they could do. My call to American was early evening on a Friday and I was expecting to not get an appointment until Monday. They sent Phil over within the hour. He was very friendly, walked me through the yard helping me find the clean-outs and main cut offs. He walked me through some of the questions I had to help me understand the plumbing of our new house. He also solved the issue and it did not involve me having to spend thousands of dollars on a new main line. I have met “good” industry professionals before, but I am incredibly pleased with the service I received from Phil and the staff at American Mechanical.” - Nate W.
  • “I would like to take a moment and extend my thanks for a job “WELL DONE” at my residence. The technicians that guided the installation of a new 20KW standby whole house generator were excellent. I would again like to thank Rodney, Tim and Drake for their time and attention in performing a flawless installation, and special mention to all support staff including Chris, Casey, John G., and Kelley as their commitment to customer service facilitated this project. To all, their attention to detail, and outstanding professionalism truly is a remarkable asset of American Mechanical of Virginia.” - Jon B.
  • “The sales representative was Mike Hayes and he was excellent. He was polite, very knowledgeable and could answer and inform us of every part of the job we were purchasing. Suggestions were made that were most welcome. Jennifer followed through promptly as promised. The team arrived on the date of installation on time. They explained what they would be doing and went right to work. No time was wasted as they asked our preferences as the needs arose. As I was recovering from surgery I do not know a lot of names but had more occasion to speak with Randy and found him to be personable and all members of the team were likeable. There was no vulgar language and all the men were polite while staying busy on the job. I believe it was John who handled the final paperwork with my son-in-law as my son was at work. I would not hesitate to refer anyone to American Mechanical.” - C. Cofield
  • “I’m very impressed with American Mechanical. Everyone I’ve talked to has been pleasant, polite and knowledgeable. The office staff set up my appointment and sent me a text message the day before as a reminder. I like that! When I called to inquire as to an exact time the technician would reach my house they were able to give me a 30 minute window and gave me the technician’s name so I’d know who to expect. Jason, the electrician, arrived on time with shoe covers. He carefully explained the product and the process as well as amn approximate timeline for the installation and maintenance. Jason was courteous, personable and knowledgeable. I’m anxious to get this project started. American Mechanical is IMPRESSIVE!” - J. Gleason
  • “From the first meeting with Mike I was impressed with American Mechanical. He had a friendly, straightforward approach that made my decision easy. Jennifer was great working with my crazy schedule to insure that the installation of my new system was done in the quickest time possible and let me know of any delays in a timely manner. David and his crew worked efficiently and quickly to install the new unit. Everyone was friendly, courteous, and professional. As the face of the company they made me very comfortable using American Mechanical again for future work on my home. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who asks and feel that I got great service, work and value for my money. Everyone was exceptional.” - Anneliese R.
  • “LT came to our house, reviewed our requirements and presented options in a very professional and efficient manner. Much better experience than another company who’s representative dragged out the process for 3.5 hours. We had four companies inspect our home A/C set up and decided to go with American Mechanical because of a combination of reasonable cost, the equipment quoted (Trane – we already have a decent Trane furnace, existing air conditioner is a 28 year old Carrier), warranty, and timeline for installation. While our existing equipment does work, we realize since its 28 years old that it is liable to fail at any time. Plus, the RR-22 refrigerant will not be available soon. Equipment has not been installed yet, but from other reviews, I do not think I have anything to be concerned about.” - Chuck McGrath
  • “I’m that guy that never leaves a review. I’m that guy that sees reviews and thinks that these reviews aren’t real. Most companies use words like Loyal, integrity and honesty to lure you in then “BAM” they hit you with a bunch of BS charges. I must say American Mechanical customer service and their HVAC technician Manny was all of the above, To top it off their tech Manny Santiago was very knowledgeable, I can sniff out BS because of previous experiences with dealing with dishonest people. But, I can honestly say Manny was very professional, and he provided a thorough HVAC inspection. I highly recommend American Mechanical and their “OUTSTANDING” HVAC tech Manuel Santiago aka Manny.” - Smiley World
  • “Since I commenced my generator install in February, through my gas line upgrade, numerous inspections, HVAC installation and most recently my service call, Karoline has always been the five star “go to” person. When it looked like Virginia Natural Gas was going to leave me without heat in the cold of winter, Karoline said that if the gas company leaves you stranded, let me know and I will get a team out there to get you heat. She is dedicated and selfless and foremost is the first contact for the customer setting the tone for the excellence you will receive from American Mechanical.” - Gregory E
  • “Tony and Taylor installed a new heat pump in our apartment today. They arrived shortly after 8 and predicted it would take until 5. Everything went smoothly until they ran into a wiring mystery created by another local company. After considerable trouble shooting, Jon came to help, and everything was wrapped up by 7 PM. Tony remarked, “There are no problems, only solutions.” Then added, “We stay until the job is done.” Everyone was calm, patient and understanding. After having bad experiences with other local companies, we are now proudly American Mechanical customers. Thank you for giving us confidence we are in good hands at last.” - Cletis Fordwicke
