Do You Still Have an Analog Thermostat?

The time to replace an analog thermostat has come and gone. Replacing your analog with a digital thermostat gives you more precise control over the temperature, which will help you save money.

Another cost-effective feature of a modern thermostat is the ability to set modes for nights, weekends, and even when you leave town. Automatically adjusting the thermostat saves money when you leave the house or don’t need the heat on as high.

However, even the more modern digital thermostats need to be replaced over time. If your thermostat doesn’t stay at the setting that you specified, or if your home doesn’t get as warm as you’ve set it, it may be time to replace your thermostat. Note: Generally, a heater that doesn’t turn on is a sign of problems within the heater itself and not indicative of a thermostat problem.

What Are Common Thermostat Problems?

With many different systems and mechanisms working together at once, it can be difficult for the untrained eye to detect what exactly the problem is. Our Virginia Beach heating and cooling experts can get in there and locate the problem, and from our experience, it’s normally one of three issues.

The most common causes of a thermostat problem are as follows:

  • Dust: Dust can often cause a thermostat to malfunction. Remove the thermostat cover after shutting off electricity to the room, and then look for dust on your unit.
  • Wire corrosion: After removing the housing from your thermostat, you may notice corrosion on the wires that may lead to malfunctions. These often require replacement.
  • No battery charge: Some thermostats require batteries for operation. If your display is no longer working, first check that your batteries are installed correctly and have a charge

Rave Reviews From Happy Customers

  • “Jennifer B. (Customer Service at American Mechanical) is an excellent service representative. She is extremely knowledgeable. On my second or third call concerning my problem Jennifer answered the telephone. I explained my situation and she took charge and solved everything within two days. I now have all the information my lawyer needs for closing. She is a pleasure to talk to and deserves a raise. Thanks again Jennifer!” - Judy S.
  • “Bobby and Darren called me 20 minutes prior to my scheduled appointment to notify me of their impending arrival. After I gave them the gate code to our community, they arrived right on schedule at my door. Both slid on blue booties upon entering my unit, went over the scope of work they would be performing and gave me an estimated completion time. Both jumped right on the job; one working on removing the old air handling unit and the other removing the condenser. Needless to say, they completed all the work to my satisfaction and prior to the estimated time. Both thanked me for my purchase, thanks to Mike Hayes, and left me with a nice cool house! Great work guys all around! What a sincere, effortless pleasure to deal with a professional company!” - Jeff H.
  • “Dennis arrived on time and performed a comprehensive inspection and report on my heating system. He answered all of my questions and provided excellent recommendations on maintenance. My experience with Dennis, as well as with all other technicians and support staff, has been outstanding because each member of the team is experienced, knowledgeable, professional and customer oriented. I strongly recommend American Mechanical for quality HVAC service at a competitive price.” - Marty B.
  • “In a late day emergency plumbing situation, Ed came out and did a top-notch job, going above and beyond. Even when it looked like he might not be able to fix the water leak in my condo, after the property manager informed him that the only water cut off was for the whole complex, there were none for the individual units. Ed took it upon himself to search around the crawl space under the building until he located the individual cut offs he knew there had to be. He was not only courteous, and professional, but was genuinely sympathetic to my plight and did everything he could to remedy the situation. I would gladly have him come out again for any future plumbing needs.” - Alan M.
  • “OK – so less than a year ago I came across American Mechanical while painstakingly “eliminating” other would be candidates/contractors to resolve a plumbing dilemma I had at my residence. For details see the “Best Seller” novel I gladly drafted and plastered all over Google! Being 59 years of age and somewhat schooled in “Old School” habits and appreciation of quality workmanship, integrity, honesty and at a fair price, it turns out that when it comes to hiring American Mechanical – “Déjà vu” is more than an illusion – it is in fact, a reality! As for my recent experience (s) and prompted by a home inspection report for another property, I simply hit the speed dial on my phone! Yes…speed dial – use them once and you will too have them in your priority directory for some corrective actions in areas pertaining to Plumbing, Electrical and HVAC. After a brief call and a delightful experience I might add in scheduling the work, their technicians Luke, Robert and Preston arrived onsite and as in the aforementioned accolades, performed all necessary repairs and in addition, addressed other small, but nonetheless important concerns – ALL without escalating ones heart rhythm or depleting ones bank account – try that with another company! In short, I practically begged them never to leave the company and I am considering contacting the owner of American Mechanical for his assurance to continue to keep his entire staff “Happy and LONG-Term campers (if you are a homeowner and exhausted your episodes of “This Old House” you’ll understand). In addition, I have no idea nor should I about the hiring methodology of this company, but the best as I can tell there is a big KUDO’s to the hiring authorities for securing such a talented crew in all aspects of their brand. In conclusion – A Big Thank You to Luke, Robert and Preston- and by all means to the audience of Facebook… stay tuned for what I deem to be another rave review for their electrical technician for whom I’ve yet to meet but is scheduled for next week. As for the 5 out of 5 qualitative rating: 5/5…yeah – they make it that simple!” - Rick S.
  • “I have dealt with all aspects of American Mechanical and not one has disappointed my husband and me. James C. with the HVAC department was just the last to come and he was also a really reliable and trustworthy person. The representatives from American Mechanical are so knowledgeable and easy to work with. They have installed a Generac whole house generator of which I could not be more impressed with the matter of installation. So many installers, all working together with their own specialty. I dealt with each one and felt so relaxed that it was done correctly, and the follow up with our so many questions was answered so that we could understand and feel confident in our part of the maintenance to protect our investment. The company also helped me remodel of our bathroom with the Plumbing Department. We plan on purchasing the yearly maintenance for all aspects of our home because we totally trust American Mechanical’s employees and the company’s way of doing business. We are informed of who is coming to our house, including the employee’s picture and references of their experiences. They come when they say they’ll be here and call before they come. I just can’t say enough good things about American Mechanical, except that we have found our home repair company for HVAC, electrical and plumbing.” - Mary R.
  • “Night and day difference between a truly professional company and your average HVAC installer. Our system never seemed quite right, but it worked until the blower motor died last Saturday. Checked the web and saw all the positive reviews for American Mechanical. Called their emergency hotline and got a prompt return call from James C.. He was willing to come out late that night, but Sunday was fine. He responded out, diagnosed the problem, and discussed solutions and options. The next day he advised the motor would be covered under warranty, a substantial savings. Today, James H. came out to do the repair. We talked about the humidity issues I’ve been having and the history of the unit. He installed the parts, cleaned the system, and did a thorough evaluation of all the settings. He found and corrected a few problems left over from a poor installation by the “average” HVAC company. He also took the time to explain what he was doing and why. I got an education! Now I am sitting in a comfortable cool room with 55% humidity. A 20 point drop! I highly recommend them and signed up for their ongoing maintenance program. Five stars for the office staff! Five stars for James C.! Five stars for James H.! And…five stars for the company.” - Frank S.
  • “My son and I needed a new HVAC system since the old unit was approaching 30 years. I did all the homework, searched, researched for the best system paired with the most professional company I could find. Everything led to American Mechanical! I set up an appointment. Neil J. was our install advisor. Neil was thorough and professional. We decided on a system for install. A date was set for the install. Trane was my ultimate choice. The install team consisted of Tony J., Jacob L., and Mason B.. The install team called around 8:00AM ready to install. Tony, Jacob and Mason were professional, but friendly. These guys FINISHED the ENTIRE system by 6:00PM the same day! Great crew! If anyone asks me to recommend a company for HVAC, back-up emergency generators, or electrical work, I will recommend American Mechanical! I cannot recommend enough!” - Dale T.
  • “Great response time in an emergency situation. Wife got home from having open heart surgery and the AC was barely hanging on, if at all really. Neil not only took a call to our home after 9 at night, but got our system up and running and gave me a quote for new install and rearranged the schedule to prioritize our installation. Nothing but extra steps of going above and beyond for our comfort and satisfaction. In a time where I witnessed the right out “let’s take advantage of a bad situation” from other companies, Neil had our backs and did not try to sell what we didn’t need, no extras, no BS. The installation crew was not only a blessing to see but courteous and professional. From the first phone call I made to job completion, everyone associated with the installation at American Mechanical made me confident I made the right call. I will recommend them and the incredible team that stands behind the crews in the field. 100%.” - Jack H.
